About this trip

The eastern Himalaya pair of Sikkim and Darjeeling gives mountain views, monasteries and tea in one trip. Gangtok, Sikkim's capital at about 1,650 m, has the pedestrian MG Marg, the Rumtek and Enchey monasteries, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and a ropeway over the town. A permit day trip climbs to Tsomgo (Changu) Lake at about 3,750 m, frozen in winter, and on to Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, with Nathu La pass added when open. A scenic drive then descends through Kalimpong or Pelling to Darjeeling, the tea town at about 2,000 m, where Tiger Hill's dawn view of Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, is the trip's set piece, followed by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's steam joyride, a World Heritage Site, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and zoo, the Batasia loop and a tea-estate visit. Permits for Tsomgo and Nathu La are arranged locally. Hotels, meals and inclusions are set by the supplier and listed for confirmation.
