Eight days from Hanoi's Old Quarter and Ha Long Bay in the north to Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta in the south.
This north-to-south route shows two quite different sides of Vietnam. In Hanoi you explore the Old Quarter, whose streets are named after trades once practised there, the lake at the city's centre, the Temple of Literature (the site of Vietnam's oldest university) and the One Pillar Pagoda. A road transfer of roughly 170 km takes you east to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of limestone islands in Quang Ninh province, where a boat cruise is the usual way to see the karst scenery and some of the caves. You then fly south to Ho Chi Minh City, a larger and warmer city with French colonial landmarks such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica and the Central Post Office, plus the Independence (Reunification) Palace and the War Remnants Museum. A day trip visits the Cu Chi tunnels, a wartime network now partly opened to visitors, and another goes to the Mekong Delta, which lies just west of the city and is crossed by waterways. The internal flight is typical for this kind of route but is listed for confirmation. Hanoi is coolest and driest from December to February and mildest in autumn, while Ho Chi Minh City is driest from December to April. Hotels, meals and entry tickets are set by the supplier.
Arrive at Hanoi airport and transfer to your hotel in or near the Old Quarter. The evening is free to stroll the streets around the lake.
Visit the Temple of Literature and the One Pillar Pagoda, then explore the Old Quarter on foot or by cyclo. Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum has strict closing days and dress rules, so check on the day. An evening water puppet show can be added as an option.
Drive east, about 170 km, to Ha Long Bay and board a boat for a cruise among the limestone islands, with a cave visit if time and conditions allow. Overnight on board or in a hotel at the bay, depending on the supplier.
Enjoy a relaxed morning on the water or at a viewpoint, then travel back to Hanoi by road. Evening free; the airport transfer for tomorrow's flight is arranged if needed.
Take a domestic flight south to Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free, with the city's markets and cafes close by.
See the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica and the Central Post Office, both from the French colonial period, then the Independence Palace and the War Remnants Museum. Finish at Ben Thanh Market for browsing; check opening hours on the day.
Spend the day on a guided outing to either the Cu Chi tunnels, a wartime tunnel network in the city's Cu Chi District, or the Mekong Delta, west of the city, with a boat ride on its waterways. Which one is included, or whether both are, depends on the supplier.
Check out and transfer to the airport for your flight home. Plan a light morning in case of traffic.
