A first-time Japan route: three nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto with a Nara day, and a night in Osaka, linked by bullet train.
This route follows the classic Tokyo to Kansai line most first-time visitors take. Tokyo, the world's most populous metropolitan area, gives you the Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, the Meiji Shrine's forested grounds, the Shibuya crossing and views from an observation deck. The Tokaido Shinkansen then covers the roughly 500 km to Kyoto in about two and a quarter hours on the fastest services. Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years and keeps the sights that fill most Japan photo albums: the Fushimi Inari shrine's thousands of vermilion gates, the gold-leaf Kinkaku-ji pavilion, the Arashiyama bamboo grove and the wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera. A day trip to Nara visits Todai-ji, whose Great Buddha Hall houses a bronze Buddha about 15 m tall, and the park where deer roam freely. The trip ends in Osaka for the Dotonbori food streets and Osaka Castle. Rail passes, hotels and meals are set by the supplier and listed for confirmation.
Arrive at Narita or Haneda and transfer to your hotel. Evening walk around your neighbourhood.
Senso-ji and Nakamise street in Asakusa, then the Meiji Shrine and Harajuku. End the day at an observation deck for the city lights.
