Tbilisi's old town and sulphur baths, a mountain day to Kazbegi on the Georgian Military Highway, and a wine day in Kakheti.
Georgia has become a short-haul favourite from India: a few hours' flight, a mild climate and a cuisine of breads, cheese and walnut dishes with plenty of vegetarian choice. Tbilisi, the capital, climbs both banks of the Mtkvari river, with a cable car up to the Narikala fortress, the domed sulphur bath-houses of Abanotubani and the balconied houses of the old town. The Georgian Military Highway runs north through the Caucasus to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda), passing the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri's fortress-church and the Gudauri ski resort before reaching the Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands at about 2,170 m beneath Mount Kazbek. A day east to Kakheti visits Sighnaghi, a walled hill town, and the region where wine has been made in buried clay vessels for thousands of years. Mtskheta, the old capital, with its Jvari monastery and Svetitskhoveli cathedral, is on the way. Hotels, meals and inclusions are set by the supplier and listed for confirmation.
